Due to a sickness known to be carried by the common grackle (a type of black bird), we have decided to take down the bird feeders for approximately 2 weeks as recommended by the Michigan DNR, to help prevent any spread of a disease. It is in our best interest to protect the birds and wildlife. From past experiences we have found that after large flocks of grackles visit they usually bring with them a sickness that can spread to the other birds. The grackles flocks can reach numbers in the hundreds here. We noticed a bird that appeared to be sick in the yard and decided to take action immediately by removing and cleaning the bird feeders to prevent any possible spread of a sickness. The feeders are cleaned weekly, but when the grackles come their numbers are so large that weekly cleaning, even daily, might not be enough to prevent the spread of a sickness. We hope that with removing the feeders the grackles will move on like they have in the past. In the future we will consider taking the feeders down at the first sign of a flock of grackles arriving. Then we may only have to take the feeders down for a few days or only one week instead of two. It truly breaks our hearts to take the feeders down, but it would break our hearts even more to allow the possibility of more birds becoming sick. Over the years it has become much easier to detect the signs of a sick bird from experience. The more quickly a sickness is detected and the feeders removed the spreading of a sickness can be prevented. If you should have any questions, concerns, or comments we would be more than happy to receive them. Just send it to us in an e-mail to: Mighty_Chikadee@extremebirdfeeding.com THIS WILL NOT EFFECT THE NIGHTTIME ACTION. Below is an example of some recent nighttime action.
